\u201cI used to read to you,\u201d Grandpa murmured, his clouded eyes gazing somewhere beyond the room, perhaps into the past. His voice carried the weight of memories, of years that had slipped away too fast.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd now I read to you,\u201d I replied, squeezing his hand.<\/p>\n
A soft smile tugged at the corners of his lips. \u201cYes. Life has a way of coming full circle.\u201d<\/p>\n
This book\u2014an old leather-bound novel\u2014was one he hadn\u2019t touched in sixty years. It had been a gift, he told me, but he never had the chance to read it. His throat bobbed as he swallowed. \u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n
I slid my finger beneath the brittle seal, careful not to tear it too much, and unfolded the letter. The ink had faded but remained legible.<\/p>\n
\u201cMarch 4, 1963,\u201d I read aloud.<\/p>\n
Grandpa inhaled sharply. His grip on the blanket tightened.<\/p>\n
I continued:<\/p>\n
\u201cMy dearest William,\u201d<\/p>\n
I stopped reading and glanced at him. He sat perfectly still, his expression frozen in a mix of shock and something else\u2014something deeper.<\/p>\n
I cleared my throat and went on.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know if you\u2019ll ever read this, but I need you to know the truth. I have loved you since the very first day I saw you. And I have kept that love inside me for years, unable to say the words out loud. But now, I have no choice but to leave, and I can\u2019t bear to do so without telling you what I never had the courage to say before.\u201d<\/p>\n
My hands trembled as I read. Grandpa was shaking, his breath uneven.<\/p>\n
\u201cI waited for you to see me. I waited for you to notice. But you never did. And now, it is too late. I am leaving tomorrow, and I will not be coming back. I do not expect you to feel the same, but I needed you to know. I will carry you in my heart forever. Goodbye, my love.\u201d<\/p>\n
The letter was signed with just one initial.<\/p>\n
\u201cYours always, M.\u201d<\/p>\n
Silence hung in the air, thick and unspoken. I could hear my grandfather\u2019s breaths, shallow and strained.<\/p>\n
\u201cM,\u201d he whispered at last.<\/p>\n
\u201cWho was she?\u201d I asked gently.<\/p>\n
He let out a ragged sigh. \u201cMargaret.\u201d<\/p>\n
His lips trembled as he spoke her name. \u201cShe was my best friend. The one who knew me better than anyone. I never knew\u2026\u201d His voice cracked. \u201cI never knew she loved me.\u201d<\/p>\n
I swallowed hard. \u201cDid you ever love her?\u201d<\/p>\n
His eyes were distant now, as if seeing something I couldn\u2019t. \u201cI loved her in the way you love someone you think will always be there. She was constant, and I thought she\u2019d never leave. But she did. And I never knew why.\u201d He shook his head. \u201cUntil now.\u201d<\/p>\n
I sat in stunned silence. A love letter, lost in the pages of a forgotten book for sixty years, had just rewritten the past.<\/p>\n
After a moment, he spoke again, his voice softer this time. \u201cDo you think\u2026 do you think she ever stopped loving me?\u201d<\/p>\n
I looked down at the letter, at the fading ink, the trembling words of someone who had once poured their heart onto paper, hoping against hope that their love would be heard.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cI don\u2019t think she ever did.\u201d<\/p>\n
Grandpa pressed the letter to his chest and closed his eyes.<\/p>\n
For the first time in a long time, he smiled\u2014not the kind that fades after a moment, but the kind that lingers, the kind that says: I remember now. I understand.<\/p>\n
And maybe, just maybe, that was enough.<\/p>\n
