The story took another turn when it was discovered that Connie was pregnant.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But sadly, there has been an unfortunate update to the story: Connie has died, after contracting a rare infection.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-connie-s-story-found-in-shipping-container\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Connie\u2019s story: found in a shipping container<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2905\" src=\"http:\/\/ezzuye.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/449781879_402239919541632_3687685932387178256_n-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ezzuye.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/449781879_402239919541632_3687685932387178256_n-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/ezzuye.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/449781879_402239919541632_3687685932387178256_n-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ezzuye.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/449781879_402239919541632_3687685932387178256_n-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/ezzuye.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/449781879_402239919541632_3687685932387178256_n.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Connie first made headlines early this year, after a surprising and unlikely rescue.<\/p>\n<p>On January 31, a team of marine inspectors from U.S. Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston were on duty, randomly selecting shipping containers for inspection, according to a Facebook post from U.S. Coast Guard Heartland.<\/p>\n<p>They were randomly chosen from thousands of containers \u2014 but suddenly, they noticed an unusual sound coming from a container 25 feet up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s scratching, dude!\u201d one officer is heard saying in a TikTok video. The cargo unit was filled with junked vehicles being shipped overseas for parts, so the officers suspected she was a stray dog who had been hiding in a junkyard car.<\/p>\n<p>The Coast Guard officers gave her water and called a local animal shelter. She was tired and hungry but most of all very happy to be rescued.<\/p>\n<div class=\"google-auto-placed ap_container\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle adsbygoogle-noablate\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9227461995181599\" data-adsbygoogle-status=\"done\" data-ad-status=\"unfilled\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"aswift_3_host\">\u201cAs soon as we opened it, we could see the little dog\u2019s face poking out. She was right there like she knew we were going to be there to open it for her,\u201d petty officer 2nd class Ryan McMahon said. \u201cAnd she just, she wasn\u2019t scared or anything. She just seemed happy more than anything, to be out of that dark space and in the arms of people that were going to take care of her.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2906 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/ezzuye.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Screenshot-2024-02-05-at-5.16.54-PM-768x1337-1-588x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"588\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ezzuye.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Screenshot-2024-02-05-at-5.16.54-PM-768x1337-1-588x1024.jpg 588w, https:\/\/ezzuye.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Screenshot-2024-02-05-at-5.16.54-PM-768x1337-1-172x300.jpg 172w, https:\/\/ezzuye.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Screenshot-2024-02-05-at-5.16.54-PM-768x1337-1.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 588px) 100vw, 588px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>It was truly a miracle she was discovered at all: the Bayport Container Terminal, on the Port of Houston, has over 10,000 containers.\u201cIt would take at least another week to get to where she was going (on a cargo ship) and two weeks without food or water,\u201d McMahon told AP. \u201cI don\u2019t think she would have made it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-surprise-pregnancy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Surprise pregnancy<\/h2>\n<p>The rescued dog was dubbed \u201cConnie the Container Dog.\u201d Initially taken in by the nearby Pasadena Animal Shelter, she was soon transferred to Forever Changed Animal Rescue in Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>There, while receiving a medical check-up, vets discovered a shocking twist in the story: Connie was pregnant! It turned out she had been carrying puppies her entire time in the cargo container, and despite the ordeal, it was still a healthy pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fetuses have strong heartbeats and were bouncing around, so while her pregnancy is guarded due to her being without food and water for 8 days or more, we are hopeful given what we could see,\u201d Forever Changed.<\/p>\n<p>In February, Connie successfully gave birth to 8 beautiful puppies. While there were some health complications given Connie\u2019s physical state, both the mom and pups pulled through.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-rest-in-peace-connie\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rest in peace, Connie<\/h2>\n<p>But Connie\u2019s happy ending was sadly short-lived. On June 28, Forever Changed Animal Rescue announced that Connie had passed away.<\/p>\n<p>The shelter said they were \u201cdevastated,\u201d and that Connie died after a battle with pythiosis, an extremely rare and aggressive fungal infection that dogs can get from drinking or swimming in contaminated water. They said she likely contracted it while surviving as a stray in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Forever Changed says they did everything they could to help Connie fight the infection, but she \u201cdeclined rapidly.\u201d They were devastated that, after all she survived and went through, she died so soon after finally finding a home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter all she had been through and survived, we simply couldn\u2019t believe that this was how her story was supposed to end,\u201d the rescue wrote. \u201cShe was such a young dog, with the absolute sweetest spirit, and yet she was such a fighter, a true survivor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe deserved so many years of love and happiness, and she had found THE MOST PERFECT family that was finally giving her that. While we are glad that she had a few good months of happiness and love, it will never seem like it was enough. She deserved more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConnie, we are so very sorry. If love could have saved you, you\u2019d still be with us, sweet girl. We love and miss you always. You fought so hard and deserved so much more. Rest easy, perfect girl. You\u2019ll certainly never be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though her life was tragically cut short, Forever Changed says that Connie still leaves behind an incredible legacy, through her inspiring story and the eight healthy puppies she is survived by.<\/p>\n<p>Forever Changed also hopes that Connie\u2019s story inspires others to adopt dogs like her. \u201cThere are thousands of dogs #justlikeConnie in Texas that are euthanized in shelters, or living and dying miserable deaths on the streets every day,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDogs are abandoned and dumped like trash constantly.
