My husband\u2019s 40th birthday was coming up, and I wanted to throw him a surprise party. To prepare for it, I told him I would be out of town on his birthday. We agreed to celebrate on another day instead.<\/p>\n
On the evening before the big day, I pretended to pack my bags and leave for the airport. In reality, I stayed overnight at my friend Karen\u2019s house.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you sure this will work?\u201d Karen asked, raising an eyebrow as I stuffed clothes into my suitcase.<\/p>\n
\u201cAbsolutely,\u201d I replied. \u201cTom thinks I\u2019m going to visit my sister.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man looked around, bewildered. \u201cWe rented this house on Airbnb. We were supposed to stay here for a few days.\u201d<\/p>\n
I felt the color drain from my face. \u201cAirbnb? This is our house!\u201d<\/p>\n
Dave scratched his head. \u201cTom must have listed it after Maria said she was going out of town.\u201d<\/p>\n
The woman looked at me sympathetically. \u201cOh my gosh, we had no idea. We\u2019re so sorry. We\u2019ll leave right away.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, no, it\u2019s okay,\u201d I said quickly, trying to keep the situation calm. \u201cLet\u2019s just figure this out.\u201d<\/p>\n
The young couple, still looking confused, stepped inside and closed the door. Everyone was murmuring, trying to piece together what was happening.<\/p>\n
Karen came over to me. \u201cMaria, what\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI have no idea,\u201d I whispered back. \u201cTom must have put the house on Airbnb when I told him I\u2019d be out of town.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tom\u2019s sister, Susan, walked up to the couple. \u201cHey, why don\u2019t we all sit down and talk this through?\u201d<\/p>\n
We all moved to the living room, the decorations and party supplies now feeling strangely out of place. The young couple introduced themselves as Jake and Emily.<\/p>\n

I pulled out my phone and called Tom. He answered on the second ring.<\/p>\n

I looked at Jake and Emily, who were sitting awkwardly on the couch. \u201cWhat do we do now?\u201d<\/p>\n
Tom sighed. \u201cI\u2019m on my way home. We\u2019ll sort this out.\u201d<\/p>\n
I hung up and turned to everyone. \u201cTom\u2019s coming home. We\u2019ll figure this out when he gets here.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jake stood up. \u201cWe can find another place to stay. We don\u2019t want to ruin your party.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lisa shook her head. \u201cNo, stay. We\u2019ve got plenty of food and drinks. Join us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily smiled hesitantly. \u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAbsolutely,\u201d I said. \u201cThe more, the merrier.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tom arrived about fifteen minutes later, looking sheepish. He walked in and immediately apologized to everyone.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m really sorry about this,\u201d he said. \u201cI was just trying to save up some money for a vacation for Maria and me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Susan laughed. \u201cWell, you certainly surprised us, Tom.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jake and Emily ended up staying, and the party went on. They were great sports about the whole situation, and soon everyone was laughing and having a good time.<\/p>\n
