My husband, Jack, is a father of three children over the age of 21. I was devastated when I met him, two years after his wife passed away. I understood why they were wary of my relationship with their father, who is ten years younger than me. He is 43 and I am 53. When Jack proposed to me, his children started to disrespect me even more, but behind Jack\u2019s back. I didn\u2019t tell him because I didn\u2019t want them to argue. I was well aware that his family had already been through a lot, especially Jack, who had to raise his children single-handedly for years.<\/p>\n

Two days after we landed, ALL of his kids showed up. \u201cDad, we missed you so much!\u201d they said. Another whispered in my ear, \u201cYou thought you were rid of US, huh?\u201d Although we were surprised by their arrival, we toured them and showed them our villa. I tried to be nice and ordered them some snacks. Meanwhile, Jack got drinks for everyone.<\/p>\n

I never thought they would ruin my honeymoon, but I almost fell over when one of their sons said to me: \u201cYou 58-year-old man! Do you still want a fairy tale? This house is too luxurious for you. We\u2019ll keep this one, and you can have that little bungalow.\u201d<\/p>\n
I said calmly, \u201cGuys, please don\u2019t ruin this for your father and me. Please let us enjoy this honeymoon and don\u2019t make a scene. I beg you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will never give you a token of happiness. You don\u2019t deserve our father and you certainly don\u2019t deserve this luxurious villa. So get out,\u201d one of them replied.<\/p>\n
And then we heard glass crash to the floor; Jack was standing a few feet from the door, purple with rage.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you kidding me?\u201d he shouted. It was a voice he had never heard before; a voice so angry that it stunned his children into silence.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve given them everything, I\u2019ve supported them financially, and this is how they repay me? By disrespecting my wife? And on our honeymoon, no less,\u201d Jack exclaimed.<\/p>\n
They started to stammer out excuses, but Jack cut them off. \u201cEnough! I\u2019m fed up with your demands. Do you think you can come here and demand whatever you want? Did you really think I didn\u2019t know about your behavior with my wife? I turned a blind eye, waiting for you to change every time. This stops now.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pulled out his phone and made a call. Within minutes, the villa\u2019s security arrived. \u201cTake them out. They\u2019re not welcome here anymore,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The security guards took his children away, their faces shocked and humiliated. They protested, but Jack stood firm. \u201cYou will never disrespect my wife or me again. Consider this a lesson in respect and a wake-up call,\u201d he added, before telling them he would also cut up all their credit cards.<\/p>\n
Jack wasted no time. He immediately called the bank and cut off their financial aid, forcing them to fend for themselves for the first time. He made it clear to them that their behavior had consequences and that they needed to learn to be responsible and respectful.<\/p>\n
The next few months were tough. For many years, they had relied on their credit cards to enjoy life. Without them, they struggled, but eventually they began to understand the value of hard work and respect.<\/p>\n
One afternoon, we received a joint call from all of his children. \u201cDad, I\u2019m sorry,\u201d they all said, their voices filled with genuine remorse. \u201cWe made a mistake. Can we start over?\u201d<\/p>\n
Jack looked at me, tears in his eyes. \u201cOf course,\u201d he replied, his voice breaking. \u201cWe can always start over.\u201d<\/p>\n
And so, slowly but surely, they rebuilt their relationship. Jack\u2019s decisive actions during our honeymoon not only protected our special time, but also taught his children a lesson they would never forget. It was tough, but it brought us all closer together in the end.<\/p>\n

I Broke Up

My mother, especially, loved being in control of everything, from my birthday parties to my graduation dinners. Sometimes, it felt like she was the one who was turning another year older or receiving a diploma.<\/p>\n

But my wedding day was different. It was a day I wanted to be completely mine, without my mother\u2019s interference. Of course, that didn\u2019t last long. It started with her insisting that I wear her veil, the same one she wore when she married my father.<\/p>\n
To be honest, I didn\u2019t mind. The veil was a family tradition, beautiful and intricately detailed, and had been made and improved with each generation. I was glad to wear it on my special day.<\/p>\n

However, as the wedding preparations progressed, my mother tried to control every little decision. A few days before the wedding, I sent her a photo of a memorial table I had set up for my late cousin and my father.<\/p>\n
My cousin was like the older brother I never had, and my father treated him like a son. We were very close, and losing them both was devastating. I loved the idea of \u200b\u200bhaving a table to honor them because it broke my heart that they couldn\u2019t be there.<\/p>\n
When my mother saw the photo, she was frightened. She was upset that she wasn\u2019t included in it. She insisted that I put a portrait of herself on the table as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should be proud of me too!\u201d she replied. \u201cIt\u2019s disrespectful and selfish of you to exclude me. If you don\u2019t put my portrait there, I won\u2019t attend your wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her words hurt me. I couldn\u2019t believe that she made everything revolve around her. That\u2019s when I decided to show her what selfishness really looked like. After our heated back-and-forth, I decided to set up another memorial table just for her.<\/p>\n
I printed out a framed photo of my mother, just as she had requested. Next to it, I added another photo: a screenshot of our text conversation in which she insisted that her portrait be displayed and threatened not to come if I didn\u2019t comply. Instead of the \u201cI wish they were here\u201d sign she had on the actual memorial table, I wrote \u201cYou wished you were here,\u201d to teach her a real lesson.<\/p>\n
