Confusion was evident on my wife\u2019s face as she continued chopping vegetables for dinner, listening to her mother.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve left your father,\u201d Catherine said. \u201cI realized he kept me away from you. I shouldn\u2019t have listened.\u201d<\/p>\n
I took over dinner prep, leaving Emily to talk to her mother. Despite everything she\u2019d said over the years, I knew Emily wouldn\u2019t send her mother away. She missed her more than she admitted.<\/p>\n
Hours later, Emily and her mother were chatting warmly. Catherine\u2019s enthusiasm for seeing Allison seemed genuine, but I couldn\u2019t ignore a nagging feeling.<\/p>\n
\u201cMom,\u201d Emily suggested to Catherine. \u201cAli has really taken to you. Maybe you could spend more time with her, take her for ice cream, and perhaps babysit occasionally?\u201d<\/p>\n
