When I arrived at her house, I was stunned to find it eerily quiet and empty. \u201cGran-Gran, did I get the time wrong for your birthday party? What happened? Where is everyone?\u201d I asked, my voice trembling. My grandmother, with tears welling up in her eyes, replied softly, \u201cSany, you aren\u2019t too late; no one bothered to show up on my birthday. But it\u2019s okay, sweetheart. I told him she was in the hospital, feeding him the same story about the hefty bills. Guilt-ridden, he promised to come up with the cash. I made similar calls to my sister and other relatives, each one feeling the sting of guilt and agreeing to send money.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

I collected a significant sum from everyone, keeping them all on edge about Gran-Gran\u2019s condition. The calls and texts started immediately. My family\u2019s guilt was palpable, and they made an effort to attend every family event from then on. Despite their attempts to make me feel guilty, I held firm.
