That particular Friday night, however, was destined to be different. Larissa, my coworker, had mentioned the possibility of seeing a sweet, elderly couple who often visited. They were a joy to wait on and always had charming stories and photos of their grandchildren. I looked forward to it.<\/p>\n
But as I was about to get back to work after a quick cigarette break, a couple walked in who immediately struck me as trouble. The woman was decked out in flashy jewelry and wore an expression of perpetual disdain, while the man exuded an arrogant swagger. They made a beeline for my section, and I braced myself.<\/p>\n
“Great,” I mouthed to Larissa, who just rolled her eyes in response.<\/p>\n
The woman snapped her fingers at me, demanding immediate service. Her tone was curt, almost hostile. I forced a smile and approached them. \u201cGood evening. How can I help you?\u201d I asked, trying to remain professional despite my misgivings.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll have a tuna salad sandwich with extra crispy sweet potato fries and a lemonade,\u201d the woman said dismissively. Her boyfriend ordered steak tacos with roasted corn and a lemonade as well. I took their order and went to the kitchen, mentally preparing for the ordeal ahead.<\/p>\n
It wasn\u2019t long before the woman called me over, complaining that her lemonade was wrong. \u201cI wanted a gin and tonic!\u201d she shouted, pushing the glass toward me and spilling lemonade on the table. I apologized and quickly remedied the mistake, my nerves fraying with every interaction.<\/p>\n
When their food arrived, the man\u2019s hand \u201caccidentally\u201d brushed against my leg. I stepped back, anger rising, and said, \u201cExcuse me. Don\u2019t touch me.\u201d The woman immediately became defensive. \u201cAre you accusing my boyfriend of something inappropriate? How dare you!\u201d she yelled.<\/p>\n
Before I could respond, Mr. Grant, our manager, appeared. I was relieved at first, hoping he\u2019d handle the situation. But when I explained what had happened, he turned to me with an unreadable expression. \u201cMia, the customer is always right. You shouldn\u2019t have reacted that way.\u201d<\/p>\n
My heart sank as he continued, \u201cI\u2019m sorry, Mia, but I cannot have this kind of behavior from my staff. You\u2019re fired.\u201d I stood there in shock, my face burning with humiliation. I collected my things and left the caf\u00e9 without a word.<\/p>\n
The next day, I couldn\u2019t shake the feeling of injustice. I decided to return to the caf\u00e9, but this time as a customer. Mr. Grant saw me walk in and approached cautiously. \u201cMia, what are you doing here?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m here to eat,\u201d I said, sitting down at a corner table. \u201cAnd I\u2019d like you to serve me, personally.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr. Grant looked taken aback but agreed. I placed a series of increasingly petty complaints, each one more absurd than the last. \u201cThis coffee is cold,\u201d I said sharply. \u201cAnd I didn\u2019t order eggs benedict; I wanted a frittata with extra mushrooms.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr. Grant\u2019s frustration grew evident. \u201cMia, this is unreasonable,\u201d he said, looking around at other customers.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, I\u2019m being unreasonable?\u201d I countered. \u201cI wonder what the owner of this caf\u00e9 would think if he heard how you treated me yesterday. It was an unfair dismissal, and you know it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr. Grant\u2019s demeanor changed. He took a deep breath and sat down across from me. \u201cMia, I\u2019m sorry,\u201d he admitted. \u201cThe principle of \u2018the customer is always right\u2019 isn\u2019t always right. You shouldn\u2019t have been fired.\u201d<\/p>\n
Relief washed over me. \u201cApology accepted. So, do I get my job back?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes,\u201d Mr. Grant said quietly. \u201cYou can have your job back.\u201d<\/p>\n
A week later, I returned to work. It was a mix of vindication and relief. As I cleared a table, I saw the couple from the previous week walk in. Before they could settle, Mr. Grant intercepted them. \u201cYou\u2019re denied entry. You\u2019re on our blacklist.\u201d<\/p>\n
The couple\u2019s outrage was palpable. \u201cWhat nonsense is this? The customer is always right!\u201d the woman protested.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s true,\u201d Mr. Grant replied. \u201cBut it only applies to customers who aren\u2019t on the blacklist.\u201d<\/p>\n
I couldn\u2019t help but smile as they stormed out, their faces flushed with anger. Mr. Grant gave me a nod of approval, and in that moment, justice had been served.<\/p>\n
Later, as I welcomed my favorite regulars, Anita and Roger, I felt a renewed sense of belonging. Their arrival and their promise of baby photos were a reminder of why I loved this job so much.<\/p>\n
