Life took a harsh turn when my son and his wife died in a car crash six years ago. Since then, I\u2019ve raised my granddaughter, Emily, who was sixteen at the time. It hasn\u2019t been easy, but we made it work.<\/p>\n

Last Tuesday, Emily burst into the apartment with a big smile. “Grandma! Guess what?”<\/p>\n

I looked up from my crossword puzzle. “What is it?”<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m engaged!” she exclaimed, showing off a large ring.<\/p>\n

My heart sank. “Engaged? To whom?”<\/p>\n

“Tom! We\u2019ve been dating for two months, and he\u2019s perfect!” Emily\u2019s excitement was palpable.<\/p>\n

“Two months? That\u2019s rather quick,” I said, concerned.<\/p>\n

“Why can\u2019t you be happy for me?” Emily\u2019s smile faded.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m just worried. What about your studies?” I asked.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m dropping out. Tom will take care of me,” she replied dismissively.<\/p>\n

“And if something goes wrong? What if he leaves you?” I asked, feeling anxious.<\/p>\n

“He won\u2019t,” she snapped. “Why are you so negative?”<\/p>\n

I sighed. “I\u2019m just trying to look out for you.”<\/p>\n

“Well, don\u2019t. I need you to move out. The apartment is mine now.”<\/p>\n

I was stunned. “Move out? But I told you it would be yours after I\u2019m gone.”<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s mine now,” she said casually. “I want you gone by tomorrow.”<\/p>\n

I tried to reason with her, but it was futile. That night, I barely slept, worried and heartbroken. The next day, Emily physically pushed me out of the apartment, insisting that Tom was moving in.<\/p>\n

With nowhere to go, I called my sister Beatrice. “Bea, I need help. Emily kicked me out.”<\/p>\n

“Come stay with me. We\u2019ll figure this out,” Bea offered, her anger evident.<\/p>\n

I took the bus to Bea\u2019s and then reached out to my friend Fiona, a private investigator. “Fi, can you look into Emily\u2019s fianc\u00e9, Tom?”<\/p>\n

“Sure. Text me what you have,” Fiona replied.<\/p>\n

Three days later, Fiona called with bad news. “Tom\u2019s a con artist. He\u2019s scammed several wealthy women.”<\/p>\n

I was horrified. “Are you sure?”<\/p>\n

“Absolutely,” Fiona confirmed.<\/p>\n

On the wedding day, I showed up at the venue with Fiona and a folder of evidence. Emily saw us and stormed over. “What are you doing here?”<\/p>\n

“Trying to stop you from making a mistake,” I said firmly.<\/p>\n

“You weren\u2019t invited!” she snapped.<\/p>\n

I held up the folder. “Tom is a fraud. He\u2019s after your money.”<\/p>\n

Emily\u2019s face went pale. “What do you mean?”<\/p>\n

“He\u2019s conned others before,” I explained.<\/p>\n

Emily grabbed the folder, flipping through it. “This can\u2019t be true.”<\/p>\n

Tom appeared, looking angry. “What\u2019s going on?”<\/p>\n

Emily demanded, “Is this true? Are you using me?”<\/p>\n

Tom\u2019s facade crumbled. “Of course not,” he stammered before fleeing the venue.<\/p>\n

Emily, devastated, collapsed into a chair. I sat beside her, comforting her. “I\u2019m so sorry, dear.”<\/p>\n

She looked up, tearful. “What do I do now?”<\/p>\n

“We\u2019ll figure it out together,” I assured her.<\/p>\n

A few days later, Emily called, panicked. “Tom maxed out my credit cards and took loans in my name. I\u2019m in deep trouble.”<\/p>\n

“You need to face this,” I advised. “Get a second job and sell what you can.”<\/p>\n

Emily agreed, acknowledging her mistakes. “I\u2019ve been terrible to you. I\u2019m so sorry.”<\/p>\n

“I forgive you,” I said. “It\u2019s time to grow up.”<\/p>\n

Emily worked tirelessly, juggling jobs and selling her possessions. She even started online classes. We settled back into a routine, and Emily began to appreciate the value of hard work.<\/p>\n

One evening, as we shared tea on the balcony, Emily said, “Grandma, I never properly thanked you.”<\/p>\n

I patted her hand. “You\u2019re welcome. I\u2019m proud of you.”<\/p>\n
