Let me backtrack a bit. When I was seven, my parents began arguing. By eight, they were separated, and Dad had moved out. I remember my mom\u2019s words clearly when she explained, \u201cRyder, sweetie, your father won\u2019t be living with us anymore. But you can still see him whenever you want, okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

Confused and heartbroken, I asked, \u201cBut why, Mom? Did I do something wrong?\u201d She assured me it wasn\u2019t my fault, but the reality of their separation was hard to accept. \u201cSometimes grown-ups just can\u2019t live together anymore,\u201d she said. \u201cYour dad and I will both always love you, and that won\u2019t ever change. We just won\u2019t be living in the same house anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom worked hard as an elementary school teacher to provide for me, and I\u2019ll always appreciate her efforts. My dad, on the other hand, seemed to become more of a distant figure in my life. As my 18th birthday approached, I hoped Dad might make an exception this time and attend the celebration. I organized a small party with Mom and a few friends, and I even texted Dad about it. His reply was hopeful: \u201cSounds great! I\u2019ll try to be there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The day arrived, and Mom made it special\u2014decorating the house, baking my favorite cake, and surprising me with a new guitar I\u2019d been wanting. Friends came over, and the house was filled with laughter and joy. Yet, as hours passed, there was no sign of Dad.<\/p>\n

I called him, and he answered with the sound of waves and chatter in the background. \u201cDad, it\u2019s my birthday,\u201d I said, trying to keep my voice steady.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, right. Happy birthday!\u201d he replied casually. \u201cI\u2019m out on the lake with the guys. I\u2019ll catch you later, okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

He was disappointed but shrugged it off. \u201cNo worries, we\u2019ll find another time.\u201d<\/p>\n

I knew we wouldn\u2019t, and for the first time, I was okay with that. Holding the rod, I realized I needed to let go of the fantasy that Dad would be the father I wanted him to be.<\/p>\n

Over the following months, I focused on those who truly cared about me\u2014Mom, my friends, and myself. I threw myself into playing guitar and helping Mom around the house, grateful for her constant support.<\/p>\n

One evening, while we were doing dishes, Mom asked, \u201cHave you heard from your father lately?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNah,\u201d I replied, \u201cbut it\u2019s okay. I\u2019m done waiting for him to show up.\u201d<\/p>\n
