Ever felt invisible at home? That\u2019s been my life. I\u2019m Irene, and this is how my brother Josh and I taught our Dad a lesson he’d never forget.<\/p>\n

It was a typical Tuesday evening. I was doing math homework while Josh read a comic book. The clock ticked toward 6 p.m.<\/p>\n

Dad came in, briefcase in hand, barely acknowledging us. “Hey.”<\/p>\n

I hoped for a smile or a “How was your day?” but got nothing. Instead, he shouted, “Mariam! Where\u2019s my dinner?”<\/p>\n

Mom, looking frazzled, replied from the laundry room, “Coming, Carl. Just finishing up the laundry.”<\/p>\n

Dad grunted and plopped down on the couch, starting his PlayStation without a word to us. The game\u2019s sounds filled the room.<\/p>\n

Josh and I exchanged glances. This was our normal, but it didn’t hurt any less.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The next evening, Dad criticized Mom for dusty magazines. “I work too,” he said, “but I expect a clean house.”<\/p>\n

Mom, exhausted, tried to explain. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, Carl. I\u2019ve been busy with work\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBusy?\u201d Dad scoffed. \u201cI work too. Is it too much to ask for a clean house?\u201d<\/p>\n

My blood boiled. Mom worked full-time, did all the cooking and cleaning, and took care of us. Dad\u2019s routine was work, eat, play video games, sleep. Rinse and repeat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s it,\u201d I muttered. I turned to Josh. \u201cWe need to do something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Josh raised an eyebrow. \u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout Dad. He treats Mom like dirt and us like we don\u2019t exist. We need to show him what it feels like.\u201d<\/p>\n

Josh grinned. \u201cI\u2019m listening.\u201d<\/p>\n

We hatched a plan. We\u2019d give Dad a taste of his own medicine. We convinced Mom to take a spa day, promising we\u2019d handle things at home.<\/p>\n

As 6 p.m. approached, we raided Dad\u2019s closet, pulling out his shirts and ties. The clothes hung off us, but that was part of the effect.<\/p>\n

\u201cReady?\u201d I asked as Dad\u2019s car pulled in.<\/p>\n

Josh nodded, adjusting his oversized tie. \u201cLet\u2019s do this.\u201d<\/p>\n

We took our places\u2014Josh on the couch with a magazine and me by the door. My heart raced as Dad entered.<\/p>\n

He froze, seeing us in his clothes. \u201cWhat\u2019s going on here? Why are you wearing my shirt?\u201d<\/p>\n

I mimicked his demanding tone. \u201cI need my dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Josh didn\u2019t look up from his magazine. \u201cAnd don\u2019t forget to clean up the PlayStation when you\u2019re done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad was confused. \u201cWhat are you two doing?\u201d<\/p>\n

I waved him off. \u201cI\u2019m busy. Don\u2019t bother me with questions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Josh added, \u201cYeah, go ask Mom. Isn\u2019t that what you usually do?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad\u2019s expression shifted from confusion to realization. \u201cIs this how you see me?\u201d<\/p>\n

I took a deep breath. \u201cYes, Dad. This is how you\u2019ve been treating us and Mom. You\u2019re always too busy and treat Mom like a servant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Josh added, \u201cShe works just as hard as you and manages everything at home. And all you do is complain and demand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad\u2019s shoulders slumped. Before he could respond, Mom walked in, surprised and relaxed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

Dad turned to her, tears in his eyes. \u201cI\u2019ve been a terrible husband and father. I\u2019m sorry. I didn\u2019t realize how bad it was until now.\u201d<\/p>\n

He walked into the kitchen and started cooking. \u201cMaking dinner! Please, sit down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Josh and I looked at each other, then joined Mom at the table. Dad served dinner, apologizing for everything.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been neglecting you all. I\u2019ll do better, I promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

As we ate, Dad was present, genuinely asking about our day. It felt strange but nice.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo,\u201d Dad asked, \u201chow\u2019s school?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s fine,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019ve got a big history test coming up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad nodded, interested. \u201cMaybe I could help you study?\u201d<\/p>\n

I was surprised. \u201cThat\u2019d be great.\u201d<\/p>\n

As we finished dinner, Dad smiled warmly. \u201cThank you for showing me how I was acting. I needed that wake-up call.\u201d<\/p>\n

I felt warmth. \u201cWe\u2019re just glad you listened.\u201d<\/p>\n

Josh grinned. \u201cAnd maybe now you\u2019ll actually join us for some PlayStation?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad laughed, a genuine laugh. \u201cDeal. But first, let\u2019s clean up together.\u201d<\/p>\n
