Curious, I listened. We had just returned from a luxury seaside resort where I\u2019d cared for their three children and the Johnsons\u2019 two sons. It was almost a break, except I was still on duty.<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly that,\u201d she said, irritation creeping into her voice. \u201cWe covered the cost and expected you to repay us. Given that the Johnsons didn\u2019t close their deal with Craig, you owe us. You have one week to pay, or we\u2019ll deduct it from your salary.\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart raced. I couldn\u2019t afford that. My salary went towards my mother\u2019s medical needs, and they had never mentioned repayment before. I needed a plan.<\/p>\n

The Smiths cared deeply about their social standing. That was my leverage. I created a fake email account and sent out a detailed message about my experience, avoiding direct names but including enough clues for others to guess. I sent it to their influential friends.<\/p>\n

Gossip spread. Mrs. Smith\u2019s reputation suffered as stories of her \u201cborrowing\u201d items like Gucci handbags circulated among her social circle. The next day, requests for these items began pouring in.<\/p>\n

During one of Mrs. Smith\u2019s luncheons, I made sure to drop hints about her borrowing habits. The guests were intrigued, and soon, the topic was all anyone could talk about.<\/p>\n

I complied and moved back home. A week later, Mrs. Johnson, a friend of the Smiths, called with an offer.<\/p>\n

\u201cJane, can you come over for tea?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

At her home, Mrs. Johnson expressed her concern. \u201cI heard about what happened with the Smiths. It\u2019s disgraceful.\u201d<\/p>\n

She then offered me a new job with better pay and conditions, praising my work with her children.<\/p>\n

I was thrilled. \u201cThank you! I\u2019d love to work for you.\u201d<\/p>\n
