Amber and I moved into a tiny, rundown apartment just over a year ago. We were pinching pennies to save for our own place. The apartment was our stepping stone. Small but manageable. Amber decorated it with second-hand finds and DIY projects.<\/p>\n

From the start, things went wrong.<\/p>\n

We met our landlord, Mr. Williams, during the lease signing. He looked like he stepped out of an 80s corporate villain movie\u2014slicked-back hair, smug smile, and a suit that screamed power.<\/p>\n

\u201cNice to meet you, Mr. Williams,\u201d Amber said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLikewise,\u201d he replied, barely looking up. \u201cLet\u2019s get this done quickly. I have other matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Williams showed up unannounced, often at the worst times. Once, he let himself in while Amber was alone. She called me in a panic.<\/p>\n

When it was time to move out, we cleaned the apartment until it was spotless. But when we asked for our deposit back, Mr. Williams sneered.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou trashed the place,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m keeping the deposit for repairs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRepairs? We left it better than we found it!\u201d Amber protested.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot my problem,\u201d he smirked. \u201cWhat are you going to do? Sue me? Try proving anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

We were at our breaking point. I felt anger and helplessness, but mostly, a desire for justice.<\/p>\n

Amber looked at me and said, \u201cWe\u2019re not letting him get away with this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you have in mind?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

She grinned. \u201cWe\u2019re going to make him regret ever messing with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

We needed something that would hit Mr. Williams where it hurt but couldn\u2019t be traced back to us.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlright,\u201d I said, \u201cwe need tuna, rotten eggs, milk, and dead mice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amber chuckled. \u201cThis is going to be epic.\u201d<\/p>\n

We bought the nastiest items we could find and put our plan into action. We hid tuna behind the AC vents, poured rotten eggs into curtain rails, spilled milk on the bathroom mat, and placed dead mice on the ceiling fans.<\/p>\n

Finally, we moved into our new house. Two months later, Amber checked in with the rental agent about our old apartment.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, it\u2019s been vacant. There\u2019s a terrible smell no one can get rid of.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amber and I exchanged a look of triumph. Our plan had worked.<\/p>\n

That evening, Mr. Williams called, furious. \u201cThe apartment smells like a dumpster. What did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n

Amber replied, \u201cWhat are you going to do? Sue us? Try proving anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another pause, then a reluctant, \u201cFine. You win.\u201d<\/p>\n

We met Mr. Williams in his office. The look on his face as he handed us the check was priceless.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t spend it all in one place,\u201d he muttered.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe won\u2019t,\u201d I said, taking the check.<\/p>\n

We cashed it immediately. Returning to the apartment to clean up felt oddly satisfying.<\/p>\n

We removed the tuna, cleaned out the rotten eggs, scrubbed the milk stains, and disposed of the dead mice. The smell finally began to dissipate.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood riddance,\u201d Amber said. \u201cI hope he learned his lesson.\u201d<\/p>\n
