My husband, George, and I were excited to meet our granddaughter Eden’s boyfriend, Jason, for the first time. Eden had raved about him\u2014how smart, successful, and kind he was. We chose a quaint downtown restaurant for the occasion, hoping to enjoy a pleasant evening.<\/p>\n

We arrived early to get settled before Eden and Jason arrived. As we were shown to our table, our waitress, Jessica, approached us with a forced smile that didn\u2019t reach her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe she\u2019s just having a bad day,\u201d George suggested as Jessica handed us the menus and took our drink order. We requested a cappuccino and an Earl Grey tea, but when Jessica returned, she brought us iced coffees instead. She seemed indifferent to our correction.<\/p>\n

A young waiter, Ryan, came over and was much more attentive. He introduced himself with a warm smile and made us feel welcome. Jessica’s attitude, however, remained cold. I overheard her talking to another waitress near the kitchen, expressing her disdain for serving older customers, claiming they didn\u2019t tip well and were a nuisance.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Heartbroken by her ageist remarks, George and I decided to handle the situation with grace. We didn\u2019t want to ruin our evening but also felt it was important to stand up for ourselves.<\/p>\n

When Eden and Jason arrived, they brought a breath of fresh air. Jason was charming, and Eden beamed with pride. Jessica’s demeanor changed dramatically upon their arrival. She was suddenly enthusiastic and attentive, likely hoping for a generous tip from the young couple.<\/p>\n

Dinner was delightful, and we enjoyed getting to know Jason. As the evening came to a close, Jessica handed the bill to Jason with a sugary sweet smile. George stopped him from paying and insisted on covering the bill himself as a treat for the young couple.<\/p>\n

I glanced at the tip section and decided it was time to make a point. I wrote \u201c0%\u201d in the tip line and handed the receipt to Jessica. Her face fell as she saw the bill. \u201cWas there something wrong with the service?\u201d she asked, her voice tight.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, the service was fine,\u201d I replied. \u201cBut we heard you don\u2019t like serving older customers and think we don\u2019t tip well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jessica\u2019s face turned pale with shock. Before she could respond, I called Ryan over and handed him a generous tip. \u201cThank you for your kindness tonight,\u201d I said. \u201cYou\u2019ve been wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n

As we left the restaurant, Eden and Jason asked what had happened. I explained the situation and told them it was a reminder that respect and kindness should be extended to everyone, regardless of age.<\/p>\n

Jason offered to speak to the manager, but George and I decided against it. We felt that Jessica\u2019s experience was a valuable lesson in respect that didn\u2019t need further intervention.<\/p>\n
