Laura has always been a formidable character, convinced of her omniscience on any topic, from kitchen hacks to current affairs. She also believes she’s the best mother in the world. Laura has two sons: Edward, my husband, and Michael. According to Edward, she was far from the ideal mother. He described a childhood filled with harsh punishments and emotional neglect.<\/p>\n

Despite her past, I fell in love with Edward, a man who had grown into someone kind and loving, thanks in part to my support. When we married, I knew about Laura\u2019s difficult nature, but her recent behavior was beyond anything I had imagined.<\/p>\n

For our second wedding anniversary, Edward and I hosted a party. We spent hours preparing, from decorating to cooking and ordering a beautiful cake. The party went well, and after the guests left, Laura handed me an envelope.<\/p>\n

\n– College tuition \u2014 $25,000
\n– Emotional support \u2014 $10,000<\/p>\n

The total was a staggering $50,000. At the bottom, she wrote, \u201cSince you\u2019re enjoying the benefits, you can help me recover the costs.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was stunned. Edward, just out of the shower, brushed it off as a joke. But I knew Laura\u2019s behavior well enough to recognize she was serious. Determined to address the absurdity, I hatched a plan.<\/p>\n

The next morning, I created a similar itemized bill reflecting the emotional toll Laura had taken on me:<\/p>\n

Laura has been unusually quiet since receiving the mail. When I saw her a few days later, she couldn\u2019t even meet my gaze. Her embarrassment was evident, and I considered that a small victory. Maybe, just maybe, she learned she isn\u2019t always right.<\/p>\n
