I don\u2019t know how to begin, but maybe it\u2019s best if I just tell it as it happened. There are days that start out ordinary, and then, in the blink of an eye, everything changes. This was one of those days.<\/p>\n
While tidying up, I noticed Bryan\u2019s nightstand drawer slightly open. I wasn\u2019t snooping, but something about it caught my eye. When I opened it fully, I found a wristwatch\u2014my late husband Jeff\u2019s. My heart stopped. Bryan didn\u2019t know Jeff; we met six months after Jeff\u2019s death. I felt a cold wave of confusion.<\/p>\n
I dropped the watch, trembling. When Bryan came home, I confronted him. \u201cWhere did you get this?\u201d<\/p>\n
Bryan went pale. \u201cI\u2026 I didn\u2019t want you to find out like this.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFind out what?\u201d I snapped.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s something I need to tell you. Jeff was my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n
I stared at him, stunned. \u201cYour brother? Jeff never mentioned you. We\u2019ve been married three years! How could you\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t just not say anything. I changed my name, left the country, and cut ties with my past after a big falling out with Jeff. I thought leaving everything behind was the only way to move on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bryan\u2019s voice cracked. \u201cI didn\u2019t know Jeff was gone until months later. By the time I came back, he was dead. I saw you at his grave, and I was drawn to you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter I returned, I found my mother at Jeff\u2019s grave. She gave me this watch as a way to make peace. I wanted to tell you, but I was afraid you\u2019d hate me.\u201d<\/p>\n
I stood there, overwhelmed. \u201cYou lost me the moment you hid this from me. I fell in love with a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, it wasn\u2019t a lie. My love for you is real. Everything we\u2019ve built together is real.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMaybe not,\u201d I said, struggling to hold it together. \u201cBut you deceived me. I trusted you with everything I had left after Jeff, and now\u2026 now I don\u2019t even know who you are.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bryan\u2019s shoulders slumped. I turned away, tears spilling over. \u201cI need to pack,\u201d I muttered, needing to move, to keep from falling apart.<\/p>\n
Bryan stood in the doorway, watching me pack with helplessness. \u201cAngela, please,\u201d he begged, his voice barely a whisper.<\/p>\n
I zipped up the suitcase, lifted it, and walked past him. At the door, I hesitated, then stepped out into the cool evening air. I didn\u2019t look back. The man I loved, the man I thought I knew, was a stranger. And I couldn\u2019t live with that. Not anymore.<\/p>\n
