Jessy and I have always had a close bond since her mother and I married. She usually enjoys baking at her dad\u2019s place, but tonight was different.<\/p>\n

\u201cJessy?\u201d I whispered, approaching her. She remained silent.<\/p>\n
I knelt beside her. \u201cIt\u2019s okay, I\u2019m here. What happened?\u201d<\/p>\n
Jessy sobbed, \u201cI\u2019m sorry. I didn\u2019t mean to make this mess. Dad\u2019s going to be so mad. You don\u2019t know him like I do\u2026 he\u2019s going to yell.\u201d<\/p>\n
I hugged her tightly. \u201cYou\u2019re safe with me,\u201d I reassured her, though I was worried too.<\/p>\n
Jessy explained that the mixer had broken, causing the batter to splatter. Her dad had gone to buy more eggs, leaving her alone to deal with the mess. She was scared of his reaction when he returned.<\/p>\n
Just then, Mark walked in with grocery bags. His cheerful expression faded when he saw the kitchen and Jessy\u2019s tears.<\/p>\n
He set the bags down, his smile replaced by concern. \u201cWhat happened here?\u201d he asked softly.<\/p>\n
Jessy was frozen with fear. I braced for the worst. But instead of yelling, Mark knelt beside her and gently asked, \u201cAre you okay?\u201d<\/p>\n
Jessy didn\u2019t answer. Mark\u2019s eyes were filled with regret as he said, \u201cI\u2019m not mad, Jessy. I promise.\u201d<\/p>\n
She looked up, her voice trembling. \u201cI didn\u2019t mean to ruin everything\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
Mark\u2019s face softened. \u201cI\u2019m sorry for scaring you before. I\u2019ve worked hard to change. I\u2019m not that person anymore. I won\u2019t get mad.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jessy hesitated. \u201cBut what if you yell again?\u201d<\/p>\n
Mark shook his head. \u201cI won\u2019t. I\u2019ve been to therapy and learned to control my temper. I need you to trust me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jessy glanced at both of us. I put a hand on her shoulder. \u201cHe\u2019s telling the truth, Jessy. People can change.\u201d<\/p>\n
She nodded slowly. \u201cOkay. But you can\u2019t yell anymore,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Mark smiled. \u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
The tension eased, and Mark suggested, \u201cLet\u2019s clean up this mess together and make the cake again.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jessy hesitated but agreed. We cleaned the kitchen together, and the fear faded, replaced by laughter. By the time we finished, Jessy was giggling about the \u201ccake explosion,\u201d and Mark was being the loving dad she knew.<\/p>\n
Later, Jessy said, \u201cI think I\u2019ll stay here tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n
