Colin and I were about to get married, and his sister Meredith was flying in for the wedding. Though I\u2019d never met her, Colin spoke highly of her, describing her as fun and strong-willed. I was excited to finally meet this important person in his life.<\/p>\n
Returning home from work, I found Colin and Meredith already there. The house was filled with laughter, and I could hear them from the hallway. I entered the living room to find Colin tickling Meredith. It seemed playful, but as an only child, I felt a bit unsettled.<\/p>\n
\u201cHey!\u201d I called out, trying to get their attention. They didn\u2019t hear me. I raised my voice. \u201cColin!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, Alexis! I didn\u2019t hear you come in,\u201d Colin said, hugging me.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou two seemed pretty busy,\u201d I remarked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, he\u2019s always tickling me,\u201d Meredith added with a grin.<\/p>\n
I forced a smile. \u201cMeredith, it\u2019s great to meet you. Colin\u2019s told me so much about you.\u201d I attempted a hug, hoping to break the ice.<\/p>\n
Her hug was polite but cool. \u201cHe hasn\u2019t told me much about you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNot true,\u201d Colin jumped in. \u201cI\u2019ve talked about Alexis plenty.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meredith shrugged. \u201cMaybe I forgot. Why didn\u2019t you come to the airport with Colin?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was working,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n
\u201cCouldn\u2019t you have taken time off? It\u2019s not every day your future sister-in-law visits,\u201d she said sharply.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I could have, I would have,\u201d I said, trying to stay calm.<\/p>\n
During dinner, Colin and Meredith talked about their childhood, laughing and sharing inside jokes while I felt ignored. Meredith kept touching Colin\u2019s arm, making me uncomfortable.<\/p>\n
Afterward, Meredith announced she\u2019d be waiting in the bedroom for a movie marathon, a tradition from their childhood.<\/p>\n
When Colin offered to help me clear the table, Meredith remarked, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t let my fianc\u00e9 do women\u2019s work, but it\u2019s your life.\u201d She then left with a smirk.<\/p>\n
Confused and hurt, I turned to Colin. \u201cWhat was that about?\u201d<\/p>\n
Colin sighed. \u201cI forgot to tell you. Meredith and I always slept in the same room when we lived with our parents. It\u2019s a tradition.\u201d<\/p>\n
I was stunned. \u201cYou\u2019re sleeping with Meredith? Where am I supposed to sleep?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can stay in the guest room,\u201d Colin said casually.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy doesn\u2019t Meredith sleep there? She\u2019s the guest,\u201d I argued.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just one night,\u201d Colin said. \u201cWe haven\u2019t seen each other in so long.\u201d<\/p>\n
Reluctantly, I agreed, feeling betrayed.<\/p>\n
The next morning, I woke up exhausted. Colin and Meredith had been talking and laughing all night. I made pancakes\u2014Colin\u2019s favorite.<\/p>\n
Meredith came into the kitchen and frowned at the pancakes. \u201cColin likes them with bacon, not chocolate chips.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, he likes them with chocolate chips,\u201d I said, trying to stay calm.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think I know what my brother likes,\u201d Meredith said, folding her arms.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaybe he liked bacon when you were younger,\u201d I said, \u201cbut now\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
Before I could finish, Meredith shouted, \u201cColin!\u201d<\/p>\n
Colin rushed in. \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n
Meredith challenged, \u201cWhat kind of pancakes do you like\u2014chocolate chip or bacon?\u201d<\/p>\n
Colin hesitated. \u201cUh… bacon, I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n
My heart sank. \u201cBut you always ask me for chocolate chip pancakes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re not the same,\u201d he said, avoiding my gaze.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot the same?\u201d I asked, bewildered.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot the same as Meredith\u2019s,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n
Meredith smirked. \u201cTold you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Feeling hurt, I put down the spatula. \u201cFine. Let Meredith make your breakfast.\u201d I walked out, upset.<\/p>\n
In the bedroom, Colin entered, looking serious. \u201cWe need to talk. Meredith wants to be the maid of honor.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat? I already have a maid of honor\u2014my best friend. The wedding is in a week!\u201d I protested.<\/p>\n
\u201cMeredith is my sister,\u201d Colin said firmly.<\/p>\n
\u201cColin, no,\u201d I replied. \u201cShe clearly doesn\u2019t like me. I\u2019m not changing it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s not fair,\u201d Colin said, frustration creeping into his tone.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m your future wife,\u201d I said. \u201cI should come first.\u201d<\/p>\n
Colin looked away. \u201cMeredith wants to move in with us after the wedding, just for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat? No way!\u201d I exclaimed.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s my sister!\u201d Colin repeated.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I\u2019m your future wife!\u201d I shot back.<\/p>\n
Colin walked out, slamming the door behind him. I was left feeling devastated.<\/p>\n
Later, I overheard Colin and Meredith talking. Meredith\u2019s voice was calm but venomous. \u201cYou need to give her an ultimatum: either I\u2019m the maid of honor, or there\u2019s no wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n
Colin\u2019s response shocked me. \u201cYou\u2019re right. I\u2019ll do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Unable to stay hidden any longer, I burst into the room. \u201cI\u2019ve had enough! If your sister is more important than me, then the wedding is off!\u201d<\/p>\n
Meredith smirked. \u201cI told you she was crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, I\u2019d rather be crazy than deal with a man who puts his sister above me,\u201d I said, storming out.<\/p>\n
Meredith\u2019s final comment stunned me. \u201cNext, you\u2019ll say it\u2019s weird to take showers together.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou shower together?!\u201d I gasped.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course,\u201d Meredith said nonchalantly. \u201cWe\u2019ve done it since we were kids.\u201d<\/p>\n
