Caroline, newly arrived in New York with dreams of Broadway, found a job as a cleaner through an agency. Her friend Melissa worked at a clothing store. The cleaning job was perfect\u2014allowing her to practice singing while working.<\/p>\n
Before starting, Caroline thought about her mother, Helen, who had disapproved of her move. Helen had always been overprotective and disliked New York. Caroline had left a note on her mother\u2019s dresser and moved away without a word. Helen hadn\u2019t called, which Caroline attributed to anger.<\/p>\n
Arriving at her assignment, Caroline entered the house using the key under the mat. She started cleaning and soon reached the office. There, she noticed a photo on the mantelpiece that looked exactly like her mother but younger.<\/p>\n
As she cleaned, the homeowner, Richard Smith, arrived. \u201cYou must be the new cleaning lady. I\u2019m Richard. Are you almost done?\u201d he asked warmly.<\/p>\n
Caroline hesitated but asked, \u201cWho is this woman in the picture?\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard\u2019s voice grew emotional. \u201cShe died in a bus crash, pregnant. Her mother wouldn\u2019t let me attend the funeral. I still love and miss her.\u201d<\/p>\n
Caroline was shocked. \u201cMy mother\u2019s name is Helen, and she looks just like this woman.\u201d<\/p>\n
Richard, stunned, asked for Helen\u2019s phone number. Caroline gave it to him, and he called her.<\/p>\n
Helen answered, \u201cHello? Is it you, Caroline?\u201d<\/p>\n
Richard said, \u201cIs this Helen Geller?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, who is this?\u201d Helen\u2019s voice was icy.<\/p>\n
Richard explained the accident and how he was kept away. Helen was shocked and said, \u201cMy mother told me you abandoned us. I raised my daughter alone.\u201d<\/p>\n
Caroline chimed in, \u201cMom, I\u2019m here in New York and fine. I don\u2019t plan on coming back until I make it on Broadway.\u201d<\/p>\n
Helen was taken aback. \u201cI can\u2019t believe this. I can\u2019t ask my mother why she did this. But I\u2019ll come to New York soon.\u201d<\/p>\n
Richard and Caroline shared a moment of understanding. Richard laughed and said, \u201cSo, I guess you\u2019re my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n
