\u201cJane, can you come into the living room?\u201d Mrs. Smith called, stirring her tea.<\/p>\n

I was tidying up the playroom and felt uneasy about her tone. I entered the living room, trying to stay calm.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, Mrs. Smith. What\u2019s up?\u201d I asked, wiping disinfectant from my jeans.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Smith and Mr. Smith were seated on the couch. Mrs. Smith looked poised, while Mr. Smith gave me a tight smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you said everything was covered. You told me, \u2018Don\u2019t worry about it, Jane. We\u2019ve got it all covered.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The Smiths cared deeply about their social standing. I decided to use this to my advantage.<\/p>\n

The next day, after dropping the kids off at school, I created a fake email account. I drafted a detailed but anonymous message about my experience, carefully avoiding direct mentions but including telltale signs like their luxury cars and Mrs. Smith\u2019s gold facial appointments.<\/p>\n

I sent the email to key people in their social circle, including influential families they wanted to impress.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just don\u2019t understand what they want from us,\u201d I overheard Mrs. Smith say into the phone. \u201cEva asked me if everything is true, but I don\u2019t know what she\u2019s talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few days later, the gossip spread. The Smiths\u2019 poor treatment of their staff became the talk of their social circle, damaging their reputation.<\/p>\n

At a ladies’ luncheon Mrs. Smith hosted, I mingled and mentioned Mrs. Smith\u2019s collection, making sure to speak to Eva, who had a similar Gucci handbag.<\/p>\n

Eva\u2019s eyes narrowed. By the end of the luncheon, Mrs. Smith\u2019s reputation for \u201cborrowing\u201d without returning items was the hot topic.<\/p>\n

The next morning, Mrs. Smith\u2019s friends began asking for their belongings back. Mrs. Smith was mortified.<\/p>\n

At dinner, Mr. Smith called me to the table, asking if I knew about an anonymous email.<\/p>\n

\u201cA disgusting email,\u201d Mrs. Smith added.<\/p>\n

I packed up and moved back home. A week later, Mrs. Johnson called me.<\/p>\n
