I Was Secretly Dating My Boss, but He Announced His Engagement to the New Girl on My Birthday

I stood in front of the mirror, adjusting my necklace, nervously checking my reflection. The blue dress, carefully chosen for tonight, accentuated my best features and reminded me of Ben’s past compliments. Tonight, I was certain, would be the night Ben would finally propose. Our relationship had been kept secret, hidden from our colleagues, but I was ready for the world to know.

As I admired myself, my phone buzzed. It was a birthday message from Greg, an old college friend. His message was warm and kind: “Happy Birthday, Laura! Any plans to celebrate? Maybe coffee later?” I smiled at the thought of his gentle friendship but brushed it aside. Tonight was all about Ben and the future I envisioned with him.

Ben had been distant all day, a detail I chose to ignore, convinced it was part of his grand plan. The party was in full swing by the time I arrived. The room was decorated with gold and silver streamers, and everyone seemed to be having a great time. I spotted Ben at the front, talking with colleagues, looking every bit the charming leader I adored.

He signaled for attention, and the room quieted. My heart raced with anticipation. This was it. But then Ben’s words were a gut punch: “I’m thrilled to announce my engagement… to Jane.”

My mind went blank. Jane? The new girl? My heart sank as the crowd erupted in applause, and I struggled to hold back tears. My dreams of a future with Ben shattered in an instant. I turned to escape, but in my haste, I tripped and fell into the large cake at the center of the room. Laughter filled the room, adding to my humiliation.

Desperate to get away, I fled to my parents’ home. My mother, always perceptive, noticed my distress immediately. “What’s wrong, Laura?” she asked with concern.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” I mumbled, barely holding back my tears.

Instead of pressing for details, she made me tea and suggested we go to the local festival. Reluctantly, I agreed, hoping the change of scenery might lift my spirits. The festival was lively with music and food, but the cheerful atmosphere only deepened my sense of isolation.

As we walked, I spotted Greg in the crowd. Panic surged; the last thing I wanted was his well-meaning but awkward company. But then, the festival host announced a contest for the best toast. On a whim, I raised my hand and went up on stage, hoping to distract myself. Instead, I ended up pouring my heart out about Ben’s betrayal.

Mid-speech, I lost my balance and would have fallen if Greg hadn’t appeared out of nowhere to catch me. He twirled me around as if we were dancing, and the crowd, thinking it was part of the act, cheered and laughed. Greg’s kind gesture helped ease the tension. Afterward, I vomited on his shoes, further adding to my mortification.

Greg, without a hint of disgust, helped me to his car and took me to his lakeside home. There, he wrapped me in a blanket and gave me a cup of tea. The peaceful lake and Greg’s calm presence provided a soothing contrast to the chaos of the previous night.

As we sat by the lake, Greg offered words of wisdom: “Life throws us curveballs, but it’s not about how we fall. It’s about how we get back up. Don’t waste your time on someone who doesn’t value you.”

In that quiet moment, I realized that while I had been fixated on a fantasy with Ben, genuine love had been right in front of me with Greg. The evening ended with laughter and heartfelt conversation, and as the stars began to shine, I found comfort and a new sense of hope in Greg’s companionship.
