I sat across from my best friend, Helen, in the breakroom, my heart still fluttering from the excitement of the night before. I could hardly contain my joy as I fiddled with my coffee cup, a huge smile creeping across my face.
“So, you’re not going to believe what happened,” I said, leaning forward. Helen’s eyes lit up with curiosity.
“Okay, spill,” she urged, clearly eager for the details.
“Caleb took me to my favorite restaurant last night,” I began, excitement bubbling over. “It was perfect—the candlelight, the wine, everything. Then we walked on the beach, and out of nowhere, fireworks lit up the sky, forming a heart! And then, he proposed!”
Helen gasped, her excitement matching mine. “Oh my gosh, Bonny! That’s amazing!”
With a grin, I showed her the sparkling ring on my finger. We spent the next few minutes talking about every detail, the magic of the night still fresh in my mind. Everything seemed perfect, until reality knocked at my door.

Later that day, as I turned the corner toward my apartment, I spotted Jane, Caleb’s mother, waiting outside. My stomach twisted. From the moment Caleb and I started dating, she made it clear I wasn’t good enough for her son.
“Mrs. Hanson,” I greeted her cautiously.
Her smile was tight, lacking warmth. “Caleb told me about the proposal. You must be very excited, Bonny,” she said, her tone dripping with condescension.
“I am,” I replied, standing my ground.
She sighed, shaking her head. “I think Caleb is making a huge mistake. You’re not the right woman for him. He deserves better.”
I felt my heart sink but refused to let her words wound me. “I love Caleb, and he loves me.”
“Love doesn’t pay the bills, Bonny. I’m offering you $10,000 to leave him. Take the money, disappear from his life, and never speak to him again.”
Stunned, I struggled to comprehend her audacity. “You think I can be bought? My love isn’t something you can put a price on.”
“This offer won’t be on the table forever,” she shot back. “Think about it—or I’ll make sure this wedding never happens.”
Furious, I turned and walked away, leaving her cold threats behind. I wouldn’t let her tear Caleb and me apart.
The next morning, panic gripped me as I realized my engagement ring was missing. Frantically searching my apartment, I felt a wave of dread wash over me. Just then, my phone rang. It was Caleb.
“Bonny, we need to talk,” he said, his tone cold.
I hurried to meet him at the café, my heart pounding. When I arrived, Caleb’s gaze was fixed on the floor. “I can’t marry you,” he stated bluntly.
“Why?” I asked, reaching for his hand, but he pulled away. “Where’s your ring?” he demanded, suspicion in his eyes.
“I don’t know! It must be at home…”
He stood abruptly. “It’s over, Bonny. I never want to see you again.” With that, he walked out, leaving me shattered.
Returning home, I found a package at my door. Inside was $10,000 in cash and a note that read, “You did good.” Rage boiled within me. Jane had stolen my ring and manipulated Caleb against me.
I grabbed my coat and stormed to Caleb’s parents’ house, bursting in during dinner. “Jane!” I threw the money on the table. “Tell them the truth! You stole my ring and lied to Caleb!”
Caleb looked between us, confusion etched on his face. “What is she talking about?”
“Mom, is this true?” he asked, his expression turning serious.
“I don’t know what she’s talking about,” Jane stammered.
Caleb’s eyes narrowed as he saw me holding my phone. I played a recording of our earlier confrontation. As the truth unfolded, Caleb’s face turned pale.
“I can’t believe I doubted you,” he whispered, guilt in his eyes.
Tears filled my eyes as he rushed over and pulled me into his arms. “I love you, and I’m so sorry. Please, forgive me.”
“I forgive you,” I said, my heart swelling with relief.
“Will you still be my wife?” he asked earnestly.
“Yes,” I whispered, knowing we’d weathered the storm together.
