When three babysitters quit after just one day, Sarah knew something was wrong. Determined to uncover the truth, she set up a hidden camera, and what she discovered left her stunned.
The morning sun shone through the kitchen window as Sarah wiped Max’s sticky hands. Her phone buzzed, and she felt a sinking feeling as she saw a message from Megan, the babysitter hired just the day before.
“I’m sorry, but I won’t be able to continue working with your family. Thank you for the opportunity.”
Sarah reread the message, trying to understand. Megan had seemed perfect—kind and responsible. What had changed?
As she tidied the kitchen, Sarah’s mind raced. Why did every babysitter leave after just a day? Was it her fault?
When Julie arrived for their coffee chat, Sarah poured out her frustration. “This is the third babysitter who’s quit after one day. They all seemed so happy at first, but then they just… leave.”
Julie sipped her coffee thoughtfully. “That’s strange. Are you asking too much from them?”
“I don’t think so. The kids are well-behaved, and I pay well.”
“Maybe it’s something—or someone—else in the house,” Julie suggested.
That thought hit Sarah hard. Could it be Dave? But she dismissed it; he had been supportive of her returning to work.
Exhausted from hiring new babysitters only to have them quit, Sarah decided to take action. The next morning, after Dave left for work, she set up an old nanny cam in the living room.
Later that day, Sarah hired Rachel, a college student who seemed perfect. Instead of heading to work, Sarah parked down the street and watched the live feed from the nanny cam. At first, everything seemed fine. But soon, Dave came home early.
Sarah watched as Dave greeted Rachel with a smile. “Hey there, how’s it going?”
Rachel replied, “Everything’s great. The kids are wonderful.”
“Good to hear,” Dave said, then added, “Can I talk to you for a second?”
They moved to the couch, and Sarah leaned closer, anxious.
“Look,” Dave began, “the kids can be a handful. Sarah’s been struggling with postpartum depression, and it’s been tough for all of us.”
Sarah’s breath caught. That wasn’t true. Her hands tightened around the steering wheel as she processed what she was hearing.
Rachel expressed sympathy, and Dave subtly hinted that if she wanted to leave quietly, it might be best. Fearful, Rachel agreed and left quickly.
Stunned, Sarah realized Dave had been sabotaging every babysitter.
The next morning, she confronted him. “I know what you’ve been doing.”
Dave tried to deflect, but Sarah pressed on, revealing she had seen the footage. Finally, he admitted he didn’t want her to go back to work.
Stunned by his betrayal, Sarah packed a bag for herself and the kids. The future was uncertain, but for the first time in a while, she was taking control.
