My MIL Knitted a Sweater with ‘Real Breadwinner’ on It and Gave It to My Husband at My Promotion Party

Last weekend was meant to be a celebration of my promotion to Senior Project Manager, a recognition of all my hard work. But, as always, my mother-in-law, Susan, had to make it about herself.

For years, I worked late and juggled extra projects while managing the home. Susan often criticized me, saying things like, “Tom must miss having a warm meal made by his wife.” Despite my efforts, she made little digs at every opportunity.

When Tom threw a party to celebrate my achievement, I was excited. It felt like a moment for me, surrounded by friends and family. But then, Susan arrived late, bringing a huge box.

“Sorry I’m late!” she announced, making a beeline for Tom. She presented him with a bright red sweater emblazoned with “REAL BREADWINNER.” The room fell silent as my heart sank. Tom held it up proudly, oblivious to my humiliation.

I forced a smile, thanked her, and tried to maintain my composure. Inside, I was fuming; this was my night, not his. Later, when I confronted Tom about it, he dismissed my feelings, saying it was just a joke. That was the final straw.

Determined to make my point without stooping to her level, I planned a subtle revenge. When Susan announced she’d be coming over for dinner, I ordered a fancy three-course meal from Tom’s favorite restaurant.

When she arrived, she was thrilled with the “home-cooked” meal, showering me with compliments. After dessert, I revealed the restaurant receipt, explaining how I thought it was important to treat Tom since he worked so hard. Susan’s expression was priceless as the realization hit her.

The following week, I presented Tom with another sweater, this one reading “Mommy’s Little Helper.” His face turned red while Susan looked like she might explode.

I felt a surge of satisfaction. I hadn’t yelled or made a scene; I simply showed Susan I wasn’t someone she could walk over.
