I’ve dealt with difficult neighbors before, but none like Meredith. Her demand to remove my harmless solar lights seemed petty, but what happened next left her begging at my doorstep.
I’m Cecelia, a 40-year-old single mom juggling my job as a marketing manager and raising my wonderful daughter, Lily. At ten, Lily is sensitive and kind, always thinking of others, like baking cookies for our elderly neighbor.
Life hasn’t always been easy since parting ways with Lily’s father nine years ago, but our quaint neighborhood has been our sanctuary for the last five years. We love sitting in our garden surrounded by the soft glow of solar lights, a project Lily insisted on to bring “fairy magic” to our space.

Things changed when Meredith moved in next door. At 33, she dresses impeccably and seems to live for appearances, but her attitude is far from neighborly. She’s unfriendly and even complained about kids playing too close to her lawn.
Then she zeroed in on my solar lights. Just a week after moving in, she stormed over, demanding I remove them because they were “too bright” and shining into her bedroom window. I explained that they weren’t bright at all and shut off automatically at midnight, but she insisted they had to go.
The situation became worse when she threatened to involve the authorities if I didn’t comply. Despite my frustration, I decided to take them down for the sake of peace, not wanting to upset Lily further.
That night, as I pulled the lights out, I could see disappointment in Lily’s eyes. I promised her we’d find even better lights later.
The next morning, I was jolted awake by loud banging. It was Meredith, looking disheveled and frantic. “Put those solar lights back up IMMEDIATELY! My yard is ruined!” she demanded. I was baffled; just yesterday she had insisted I take them down.
She explained that without the lights, raccoons had invaded her garden, wreaking havoc on her prized flowers. I couldn’t help but smirk and reminded her that I had warned her those lights served a purpose.
Desperate, she begged me to put the lights back and help clean up her yard. But I had enough. I told her, “That’s not my problem. You made it clear you didn’t want those lights.”
After shutting the door on her, I felt a mix of satisfaction and disbelief. Over the following weeks, Meredith spent hours and a small fortune trying to restore her garden. Meanwhile, Lily and I happily put our solar lights back up, even adding more for good measure.
This experience taught me that karma has a way of balancing things out. Meredith wanted those lights gone, and she got exactly what she asked for—plus a little extra!
