After visiting my mom for two weeks, I was excited to surprise my husband, Hayden. I wanted to get home, shower, and plan a big dinner for us.
Finding a taxi at the airport was difficult, but I finally agreed to share a ride with another passenger. I got in and met a friendly woman named Kristen. We chatted easily about our lives and travel experiences. She mentioned she was looking forward to a home-cooked meal her boyfriend promised her. I shared my own plans to surprise Hayden with dinner.
As we drove, the taxi turned onto my street. I thought Kristen might be going somewhere nearby, but when she asked the driver to stop right outside my house, my heart sank.
“It was nice meeting you, but I’ve got to go. My man is waiting for me inside,” she said excitedly.
Feeling uneasy, I asked the driver to take me around the corner instead. I called Hayden, trying to sound casual, but my stomach twisted as he mentioned he was at the office.
When I quietly entered the house, I heard voices coming from upstairs. I crept up and peeked into the bedroom to find Hayden and Kristen there.
“What is this?” I demanded, shocked.

“Heather?” Hayden gasped. Kristen looked pale as she explained that she had no idea he was married.
I scanned the room and realized all traces of my life were gone. I believed Kristen because she sounded genuine, and it was clear that Hayden had hidden our life together.
“I think you need to leave now,” I told Kristen. She nodded and slapped Hayden across the face before leaving.
Hayden pleaded with me to listen, but I cut him off. I was done. I wanted a divorce.
“I want a divorce,” I said firmly.
He begged me not to do it, but I was resolute.
“Where are my clothes? Where’s our wedding photo?” I asked, noticing the absence of our life together.
I reminded him of the prenup that stated he would get nothing in the event of cheating.
“Please, don’t do this!” he said, but it was too late. I had made my decision.
I told him to pack his things and leave. I took a deep breath, closed the door behind me, and prepared to move on.
