Campbell has always loved the challenge of taking things apart and reassembling them in new, inventive ways. Initially, he planned to use his land to construct a house from a series of retired shipping containers. He believed he was onto a completely new concept, only to later discover that a similar idea had already come to life. About two decades after his initial vision, Campbell learned about Joanne Ussery, a hairstylist from Mississippi who had transformed a Boeing 727 into her home. Following a fire that destroyed her previous residence, she rebuilt her home along a peaceful river in the shape of an airplane. Inspired, Campbell decided to adjust his own plans in a big way.
In 1999, Campbell made the bold decision to purchase his own Boeing 727 from Olympic Airways for $100,000. Moving the aircraft to his Oregon property wasn’t easy, as it had to travel all the way from Athens, Greece. With a transportation cost of around $120,000, his total investment came to $220,000. Despite the challenges and high costs, Campbell saw this as money well spent to bring his vision to life.
