Phoebe Cates, known for her roles in iconic ’80s films like “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and “Gremlins,” transitioned from a successful acting career to a fulfilling life as a businesswoman in New York City.Born on July 16, 1963, in New York City, Cates was destined for the spotlight with entertainment in her blood—her father, Joe Cates, was a prominent producer-director.

Cates began her journey in the arts studying ballet at Juilliard but shifted to modeling after a knee injury which prevented her to perform. Although she found success gracing magazine covers, Cates realized acting was her true passion.

She then trained with respected acting coaches and made her debut in the 1982 film “Paradise,” followed by the breakout role of Linda in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” forever etched in pop culture for its memorable pool scene.

While continuing her acting career with roles in “Gremlins” and “Private School,” Cates met theater actor Kevin Kline during auditions for “The Big Chill.” Their eventual marriage in 1989 marked a turning point in her life. After welcoming their children, Owen Joseph and Greta Simone, Cates decided to step away from Hollywood to focus on family.


In 2005, Phoebe Cates embarked on a new chapter by opening Blue Tree, a boutique on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. This venture allowed her to channel her creativity into curating a unique collection of fragrances, clothing, and gifts. Cates is actively involved in her store, often sourcing new products and interacting with customers.

Her decision to prioritize family and entrepreneurship over acting has brought Cates fulfillment and happiness. Despite her Hollywood legacy, Phoebe Cates has found enduring success and contentment as a dedicated shopkeeper and mother in the heart of New York City.
