The dance floor felt like their whole universe. Two amazing people held each other tightly, promising to reunite in ten years, no matter what life threw at them, whether it was joy or challenges.
“I can’t leave,” Sally said softly, her mascara running from her tears. “What will I do without you?” she asked, her voice trembling.
“Sally, going to school in Europe has always been your dream. I don’t want to be the reason you don’t chase it. You’re meant for incredible things, and I don’t want to limit your future,” Peter replied, secretly wishing she would decide to stay.

Peter pulled her closer, their fingers locked together, and made a promise to always stand by her side; she was the most beautiful girl he had ever laid eyes on.
“Peter, you have to promise me that you won’t forget me. In ten years, let’s meet at Times Square.”
“If you’re married by then, I’d love to hear about your happiness… but no matter what, you have to promise to meet me. I’ll have a yellow umbrella with me.”
“I promise,” Peter replied, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. “On Christmas Eve, ten years from now, I’ll be there, waiting for the most beautiful girl holding a yellow umbrella. I’ll be there.”

These two soulmates had hearts that beat together like a perfect rhythm. Even though they were going their separate ways, they understood that some goodbyes are really just “see you later.”
Over the years, Sally and Peter kept in touch. But then, her letters suddenly stopped, and Peter started to worry about the girl who had captured his heart.
No amount of time could change how he felt about her. His love for her only grew stronger with each day that passed.
The idea of seeing her again after ten years filled Peter with excitement and hope.
When the big day finally came, he felt deep down that Sally would be true to her word and wait for him at Times Square, holding a yellow umbrella.

Peter was standing by the huge Christmas tree, looking through the sea of people for someone he knew. He was hoping to spot a familiar face and hear a laugh that he remembered so well.
Time passed quickly, and even after an hour, Peter didn’t feel bored. He believed it would be worth the wait.
Out of nowhere, he heard a small voice calling his name from behind him.
He turned and saw a little girl with a yellow umbrella. Her eyes were big and familiar.

The girl nervously chewed on her lip, a familiar action that took Peter by surprise. He stood still for a second, noticing how the girl’s umbrella shook in her small hands.
“I’m Betty,” she said softly, “and she’s not coming back.”
“What do you mean? Who are you?” he questioned, even though deep down, he felt he already knew the answer.
“I’m your daughter,” she replied, her green eyes starting to fill with tears.
“My daughter?” Peter struggled to ask. But just as she was about to say more, a tall man in a sharp suit and a classy woman walked up to them.

“Hello, Peter! It’s great to finally see you. We’ve heard a lot about you,” the woman said with a warm smile.
The man, looking very sad, added, “We are Sally’s parents.”
Peter looked confused and worried. “But where is Sally? And why does this girl say she’s my daughter?” he questioned.
At that moment, the woman started to cry. “Peter, Sally is no longer with us. She passed away from cancer two years ago. She didn’t want you to find out because she didn’t want to add to your worries.”
Peter’s whole world crushed. His Sally was gone – the only woman he ever loved.

This girl is your daughter. Sally was aware that your mom was really unwell, and she didn’t want to add any stress to your life. However, she wished she had told you that she was expecting your baby.
Peter couldn’t find the words. He felt a mix of emotions swirling inside him. Sadness filled his heart, but there was also a surprising happiness because he now had a daughter, a piece of Sally that would always be with him.
Sally’s dad gave Peter a diary. It belonged to Sally. Inside, she wrote about the promise they made to each other to meet again in ten years, and that’s how they discovered he would be waiting for her.

Peter wrapped his arms around his daughter in a warm hug. He squeezed her close and vowed that he would always be there for her.
Betty was excited to tell him all about her mom, who had passed away, and he felt grateful to learn more about Sally’s life through her stories.
It took a lot of time and effort to bring Betty from France, where she had been living with her grandparents, but finally, she settled in with her dad. They made sure to visit her grandparents two times a year, and Betty quickly became the center of Peter’s universe.
