I Am 8 Months Pregnant and My Husband’s Night Eating Is Constantly Leaving Me Hungry

Hey everyone, I’m eight months pregnant and incredibly excited about our baby’s arrival. However, there’s a hiccup that’s been making things tough: my husband Mark’s incessant nighttime snacking.

Every night, Mark raids the kitchen after midnight, devouring everything in sight. It’s not just a nuisance; it’s leaving me hungry. With pregnancy cravings and fatigue, waking up to find no food and having to cook or shop again is exhausting.

We’ve discussed it repeatedly, but Mark dismisses my concerns with suggestions to make more food or stash snacks just for me. Last Thursday night was a turning point. I’d cooked a big batch of chili, expecting it to last a few days. At 1 AM, I found Mark helping himself to almost all of it. “I was so hungry,” he said, clearly oblivious to the effort I’d put in.

I was too tired to argue and went back to bed, but I knew something had to change. The next morning, I found out he’d eaten the lasagna I’d planned for lunch. I was at my breaking point, sitting on the kitchen floor surrounded by grocery bags I hadn’t even had the energy to put away.

I called my sister in tears, explaining how Mark’s eating habits were affecting me. She advised talking to his mom, which I reluctantly did. Mark’s mom, Linda, was understanding and promised to help.

Linda and Mark’s dad, Mike, came over the next weekend. Linda cooked some of my favorite dishes and labeled them “For Mom-to-Be Only,” while Mike installed lockboxes in our pantry and fridge.

That night, Mark discovered he was locked out of the stash. The notes his mom left him were humorous but clear, like one that read, “Think of your pregnant wife—grab an apple instead!” Mark took the hint and grabbed an apple.

Linda then had a heart-to-heart with Mark, explaining how his nighttime eating was affecting both me and the baby. Mark was genuinely surprised and began to understand the seriousness of the situation.

Since then, things have improved. Mark’s snacking habits became more considerate, and he even started helping more with meals. This experience, though stressful, strengthened our relationship and prepared us to face parenting as a solid team.

As we await our baby, I’m grateful for how everything turned out. The intervention not only solved the immediate problem but also brought us closer. We’re ready for whatever comes next, knowing we can handle it together.
