I never imagined I’d become that guy—sneaking around my own house in the dead of night, consumed by suspicion. But there I was, heart racing and palms sweating, creeping down the stairs at 3 a.m. like a scene from a thriller.
Three months ago, Jade, my wife of three years, told me she was pregnant. We had been trying for a baby, and I was thrilled. But as her belly grew, Jade seemed distant. At first, I attributed it to pregnancy hormones. “It’s normal,” I reassured myself, “She’s growing a baby; it must be exhausting.”
Then came the late-night phone calls. Jade would step out to talk in hushed tones. When I asked, she said it was her mom checking in. My doubts grew, but I wanted to believe her.
One evening, Jade mentioned running an errand at 11 p.m. I offered to come, but she declined, insisting I stay home. That’s when paranoia set in. Why wouldn’t she want me with her?
Tonight, I woke up to find the bed empty. The front door creaked open, and I saw Jade ushering someone inside—a man. I couldn’t make out his face, but their whispered conversation and soft giggles shattered my world. “Be quiet,” Jade said, “Jake might wake up, but I want to have some fun with you!”

Unable to bear it any longer, I burst into the kitchen, ready to confront my wife and her lover. What I saw left me speechless. Jade was sitting at the kitchen table, a half-eaten sausage in one hand and a chunk of watermelon in the other. On the counter were three massive watermelons. And the man? It was Ethan, Jade’s brother.
Jade’s eyes widened. “Jake!” she exclaimed, nearly dropping her snacks. “What are you doing up?”
My mind was racing. “I… you… what’s going on here?”
Ethan, always the joker, grinned. “Surprise! It’s a midnight picnic. Want some watermelon?”
Jade shot him a look. “Not helping, Ethan.” She turned to me, her expression a mix of guilt and amusement. “Jake, I can explain.”
I leaned against the doorframe, feeling foolish. “Please do.”
Jade sighed. “I woke up with an intense craving for watermelon and sausages. I felt like I’d die if I didn’t get them right away.”
“At 3 a.m.?” I asked, trying to understand.
She nodded. “Pregnancy cravings are no joke. I didn’t want to wake you. You’ve been so tired.”
“So you called your brother?” I asked.
Ethan grinned. “Guilty as charged. I’m the official midnight snack delivery guy.”
I ran a hand through my hair, the adrenaline fading. “But why the secrecy? The whispering?”
Jade looked sheepish. “I knew it sounded ridiculous. I was embarrassed. I didn’t want to disturb your sleep.”
“And the ‘fun’ you mentioned?” I asked.
She laughed. “Eating without guilt! What did you think we were doing?”
The absurdity of the situation hit me all at once. I’d been imagining the worst, and here they were, having a bizarre pregnancy-craving picnic.
I laughed too. “I thought… I don’t know what I thought.”
Ethan clapped me on the shoulder. “Dude, I’m flattered you think I could steal your wife, but she’s my sister. And very pregnant.”
Jade waddled over, and I wrapped my arms around her. “I’m sorry for sneaking around,” she said. “I should have just woken you.”
“I’m sorry too,” I said, holding her close. “I’ve been feeling disconnected lately. I should have talked to you.”
Jade’s eyes filled with tears. “This pregnancy has been harder than I expected. Not just physically, but emotionally. I didn’t know how to tell you.”
“You can tell me anything,” I said. “Always.”
Ethan cleared his throat. “As touching as this is, can we get back to the snacks? I didn’t drive across town for nothing.”
We laughed, the tension melting away. I joined their midnight feast, eating watermelon and sausages.
Jade shared her fears about becoming a mother, her insecurities, and mood swings. “I didn’t want to burden you,” she said.
“We’re in this together,” I assured her. “The good, the bad, and the 3 a.m. cravings. Okay?”
She nodded. “Okay.”
Ethan, mouth full of sausage, added, “You guys are gross. But I’m glad I could help bring this moment.”
We threw watermelon rinds at him, laughing as dawn approached. The night’s bizarre events had unexpectedly brought us closer, reminding us of the importance of communication.
Jade yawned. “I think it’s time for bed. For real this time.”
I helped her up, turning to Ethan. “Thanks for everything.”
He waved it off. “Anytime. But maybe next time, keep some watermelon in the fridge?”
As we headed upstairs, I felt a renewed connection with Jade. Settling into bed, Jade curled up beside me.
“Jake?” she murmured.
“Yeah?”
“I love you. Thanks for not freaking out.”
I kissed her forehead. “I love you too. Next time you have a craving, wake me up. I’ll be your personal snack delivery guy.”
She chuckled. “Deal.”
As I drifted off, I smiled. Life with Jade was never dull, and our little one was already keeping us on our toes. Sometimes, a midnight scare can turn into the wake-up call you didn’t know you needed.
