My DIL Wants Me to Serve Her Full-Time after Giving Birth but Won’t Let Me Stay at Their Home

I’m Meredith, a mother and grandmother living alone after my husband’s passing. My son Joshua and his wife Addison live in another state. When Addison was due to give birth, I was eager to help. I offered to take care of cooking, cleaning, and shopping while staying with them.

However, when I called Addison to confirm my visit, she surprised me by saying I’d need to stay in a hotel rather than their home. I was shocked and hurt. I felt it was unfair to pay for a hotel while providing full-time help.

I confided in my late husband’s memory, seeking guidance. Then, Joshua called, and I expressed my disappointment and frustration. I explained that if I was to help, I needed to stay in their home, not pay for a hotel. Joshua agreed to discuss it with Addison.

A few hours later, Joshua called back. They had reconsidered and agreed that I could stay with them. I was relieved but emphasized the need for mutual respect. I wanted to feel appreciated, not like a burden.

When I arrived, Joshua and Addison greeted me warmly. They made sure I felt welcomed and settled in comfortably. We found a good rhythm in managing household tasks, and Addison and Joshua were more considerate and appreciative.

The experience taught me the importance of setting boundaries and ensuring my kindness is respected. Helping family is important, but not at the expense of my dignity and well-being.
