When Jessica and her husband Edward welcomed their first child, Kathy, they faced financial struggles. Edward’s textile business in Texas was struggling, and Jessica worked as a weekend nanny to help make ends meet. Expenses rose with the baby, and their income was insufficient.
One month, things seemed to improve. Edward’s business was growing slowly, and Jessica had saved some money. However, their washing machine broke down, and repairing it would be almost as costly as buying a new one. Jessica decided to search for an affordable replacement.
She found a washing machine priced at $250, but she could only afford $150. Deciding to negotiate in person, she visited the seller, James Carter, at his address. James, looking exhausted but calm, agreed to sell the machine for $150 after hearing Jessica’s situation.
Jessica was grateful, and they struggled to move the heavy machine to her car. James said he was leaving and wouldn’t return. Jessica thanked him and drove home.

When she opened the machine to check it, she discovered $150 and a note inside. The note read, “It’s a gift for your newborn baby. I didn’t think it was fair to ask for money from someone struggling financially. Someone once told me to help those less fortunate if I can.”
Jessica was touched and realized James had probably hidden the money while she was fetching ropes for the machine. She wanted to thank him but couldn’t find him; the house had a “For Sale” sign.
One year later, Jessica and Edward moved to a new home, and things were going well. Jessica noticed her neighbor Sandra struggling with a worn-out washing machine. Remembering James’ kindness, Jessica decided to help Sandra.
She left the washing machine on Sandra’s doorstep with a note: “With love from your neighbor, Jessica.” Sandra’s joy was evident when she saw the machine. Jessica felt the same warmth she had experienced when James helped her, and she wondered who had inspired him to be so generous as they drove to their new home.
