A Lancashire teenager, Jay Slater, vanished into the mountains of Tenerife after attending a music festival. Now in its second week, the search has left experts concerned about his survival chances in the harsh landscape, causing distress for his family and search teams.
Jay, a 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer, disappeared on June 17, 2024, after the NRG music festival. Last seen walking into the mountains near Masca village, he had been staying at a remote Airbnb with two men he met at the event. His father, Warren, and brother, Zak, have flown to Tenerife to aid in the search. Warren expressed his confusion, stating, “It doesn’t make sense. Nobody would walk off that road.”
Despite extensive efforts involving mountain rescue teams, local police, and volunteers, Jay remains missing. A possible sighting reported by his mother, Debbie, near Santiago del Teide has yet to be confirmed. The family and friends continue distributing flyers and sharing images, hoping for any leads.
Search operations, including helicopters, drones, and search dogs, focus on a 30-kilometer area. Mike Neville, former Head of Lambeth Missing Persons Unit, highlighted the challenging terrain and the difficulty of aerial searches. The local community and British friends have rallied around the Slater family, determined to bring Jay home.
